![]() ![]() It cannot be ignored that for the majority of this time neither of them knew the truth about themselves or each other. She only saves him in non-story line moments (like before I had gotten Return to Sender and could shield myself for more than two bullets), which can be argued to be basically inconsequential. Throughout the game Booker is saving her. I just wish Elizabeth, the girl with amazing powers, got more than two opportunities to conquer her fears (kind of) and actually do something on her own (kind of). I’m not saying it ruins the game, or even taints it. Yes, she was in a tower her whole life and yes seeing someone killing like that when you’ve been sheltered so long probably would be incredibly jarring and terrifying, but my nagging conscience can’t help but whisper “If she had been a boy…” However, part of me still can’t justify Elizabeth not being cooler. Booker being Comstock, Elizabeth being Anna, the singular fatalist ending, it was all incredibly well crafted (though a bit confusing, which can be a good or a bad thing). It also managed to somewhat redeem him as a heroic hero, as throughout the game he was being the dad he had never been able to be (mostly his own fault, but still…) It validated almost all of Booker’s actions in going to Colombia and trying so hard to get Elizabeth out, and kind of made up for her being so useless, because he was just protecting her. The reveal that Elizabeth is Booker’s daughter was a game changer to say the least. This nagging thought itched in my brain up until the final sequences when I (Booker Dewitt) landed in that gray room we all know so well by now, and heard that damn mechanical lullaby, and saw Anna. Once you start playing the game however, you start to realize Elizabeth’s potential and you think that maybe she could be really useful as an ally instead of just a captive. I know that this was kind of promised from the beginning with the promo involving the save-the-girl-kill-the-beast gameplay clips that I’ve grown to expect from the first person shooter genre. If she had been deleted, they would’ve just been coded to sit on the ground with the rest of the accessible goodies. Not gonna lie those health packs were incredibly helpful, but they only helped because the game was made around her. Elizabeth literally and figuratively got in the way through at least half of the game play and at best she was the world’s best sidekick. Booker DeWitt could’ve been equipped with lock-picking abilities and I dare one of you to say you would’ve questioned it. This was basically the same problem I’d had with Jodie (Beyond: Two Souls). Other than lock-picking doors and finding money that only existed for her (I scavenged like a beast), Elizabeth served no purpose beyond being a catalyst for plot (Give us the girl and wipe away the debt). Lock picking screencap (Soldier’s Field Greeting Pavilion/Lock Pick #1) posted by Piotr Kulka on as a part of a gaming walk through. Stay with me.Ĭatch Coin wallpaper (bioshock-infinite-elizabeth-wallpaper-21) uploaded to by Nick Riley. Here’s the thing: Elizabeth was unnecessarily useless as a character. Fair warning: this review will be contained to the main story-arch, not the DLC. Those jump scares and free falls though… Anyway, I got exactly what I wanted out of this game: intrigue (Who was Booker? What was the debt? Why is Comstock such a jerk-face? Are the Luteces real?), beautiful animation, great voice acting, multiple badass villains, difficult though not insurmountable game battles (this means I died… a lot). I was hoping the sky would be less frightening than the sea and was not disappointed. ![]() I bought this game a few months back, because I’d loved the first two for their amazing storytelling and artistry though to be honest they scared the absolute shit out of me.
